Safe landing--Retirement Trip Day 4

Despite constant rain, Ben landed safely and on time in Portland this morning. The rooftop carrier prevented me from using the parking garage so I was stuck in the hinterlands of long term parking. In 1975, when I flew into Portland to spent a Winter Term volunteering in a Lewiston Hospital with a college chum, the airport was tiny and they rolled steps onto the tarmac for us to disembark. It's grown a taste and we got soaked going the distance out to the truck.

Not to be deterred, we found a wonderful local bakery and market for lunch, explored lovely old coastal neighborhoods, examined old light houses, enjoyed state parks created around old WWII fortifications and had supper in a craft brewery that was part of a huge (HUGE) renovated mill complex. Oh, and we shopped LL Bean in Freeport at their original store. Greg and I went there on our honeymoon back in '88. The potbellied stove and rocking chairs were missing from the shoe department but there was plenty of backwoods charm and actual sales people who walked up and offered help. All in all, a pretty amazing day.

It's late, we are both bushed, so I will let the pictures tell all. Ben is snoozing and I'm about to. Good day and good night! (You can click on the pictures to make them larger.)

So it automatically changes the toilet seat cover. Who knew??

An 1848 mansion that housed WWII troops. Old fortifications are everywhere.

The incredible rocky coast

LL Bean, Freeport, of course!

Could not get enough of the shoreline.

Ben's panorama of the mill where we had supper

Built to resemble a silo, men triangulated enemy ships using a local light house and this location to aim their guns.
